Just got back from a shopping spree at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I heard “caphalon” and it seemed like it was everywhere. they had caphalon brand as well as t-fal and some others. caphalon makes a non-stick line and i couldn’t tell if those had teflon on them (what do i know)
As my brother and I looked at them, some man (a customer) carrying a big old box of non-stick caphalon cookware asked what i was looking for. (guess i looked lost or something) and i said i was wondering if that line used teflon for their nonstick material or not. he said “what does it matter” … well, i really didn’t want to get into it but i made it short and said “i had a parrot that died from teflon poisoning recently”.. and he kinda shruged and goes ” …well …. i have a parrot too. and i use nonstick cookware all the time. u just gotta be careful and open your windows when you cook.” I really didn’t want to be told that i “just need to open my windows” screw him. it’s too late for advice now, and had i known about it, i wouldn’t have “just opened my windows”. i looked away and started to get back to my pot shopping when he turned back and asked “what kind of bird?” .. man, i really rather not have to talk about it and tell the story over and over… i made it short again “an african grey” The lady that was with him had a look of devestation on her face. compassion i guess, dunno.. like she felt for me. then some other lady customer passing by stopped and started listening to the conversation.
He asked “what kind of pots did you have”
ME “some cheep brand”
HIM “how long have you had them”
ME “4 years”
seeing as he was about to take a brand new set of non-stick lethal ware home where he had a parrot of his own, I felt compelled to say “i cooked around her with those pots for 4 years and i guess the last time was the straw that broke the camels back. I had her for eleven years.” maybe knowing that would have made him change his mind about the pots, but he took off with them anyway. oh well.
I got the pots without non-stick coating. they cost a roughly 200 bucks for a 10 piece set. they’re expensive as hell, but very pretty.. I’ve never owned such an elegant set of cookware in my life. I wonder how much things will stick to them. they’re stainless steel with aluminum bottoms.
Caphalon is not teflon. Nothing sticks to those pans. I know they are expensive but worth every dollar.. you can even use metal in them. I have this theory on purchases. You can buy things you need for you house, that are cheap.. and youll probably buy it over and over again.. Your better off buying something that will last years and years… Pans are not something that go out of style. ;)
Anyways… good luck with the new cookware. *hugs*
Reply to chinasunflwryeah i agree it doesn’t matter the cost. better to have quality that will last a lifetime then crap you’ll need to replace. sad thing is i knew my old pots needed to be replaced but never got around to it.
i got the kind that is all stainless steel. (no non-stick coating) i read teflon is the brand most people name when talking about toxicity to birds but only because it’s the most wellknown. they say all nonstick are potentially toxic. i expect the calphalon is better quality.. anyway, i’m glad to have these their so pretty. :) actually, i’m going to test it now. heehee.
