still recovering

We still have a lot of fixing and cleaning to do outside before things out there return to how they were..  and now our cable internet connection is flakey as hell.  we’re on for 2 minutes, then off for 10.  Adelphia said it will be a long while before they can send someone out to fix it.

I didn’t realize how essential having power is to having a “normal” life until it was restored.  It’s convenient, it’s comfortable but something is definitely missing.  You shut yourself in from the world and crank up the A/C to keep the cool and keep the heat out but you also shut out all the world, all your neighbors and everything.  It was nice talking to our nieghbors and it was nice not finding anything else to do but spend time with my daughter OTHER than usual feeding, diaper changing, and bathing..

well, now i put my laptop down more often and just take jada by the hand and let her take me around the house and I go outside with her a bit.  She really likes it out there.    we washed down the patio so at least now I don’t have to worry about her sticking a dead bug in her mouth.  the garden is still a wreck and dirty with dog poo.

I still listen to the hurricane network on the radio just to keep in touch with people up north still suffering without power, water, food, ice, etc.  Some of their stories are terrible.  One lady called in and said fpl gave her an eta of august 4 because she was “low priority” ..  jesus.    If we’d had an eta like that, I think Dennis and I would have divorced by then.  He can’t take the heat very well and both our tempers were wearing thin.      I do miss him not having video games to play, though.  what a damn time waster that is.      …and so is the TV for me.  Now after watching an hour of it, I shut if off and do something else or just think.    And I still like to play cards with Dennis and sometimes I ask him to shut off the tv so we can just talk.

Electiricity is nice but…  it also detaches you from the world, your family, and even yourself.

Do you mean October 4th? If so that’s INSANE. No power does suck, but I do agree it sure let us all in our neighborhood meet soem neighbors we never knew, and get to know other ones better. Now that power is back on I don’t think I’ve seen a few of them since then, they are back to being hermits :-)

That reminds me of last summer when there was that big blackout that knocked out power in most of Ontario, some of Quebec, and some of the north-eastern US states. Everyone in the city was just milling about the streets with flashlights, and we were able to see all the stars so clearly. We just sat around talking and listening to a battery-powered radio. I think the only thing I really missed was the internet, but even that I can do with a vacation from once in a while. Despite all the bad things related to/that caused a lack of power like that, in a way it’s good to be reminded of what it’s like without all electronic distractions.

yeah, same here. everybody’s in their house basking in the a/c breeze. i think we might organize a bbq and just invite the neighbors we’ve talked to just to kit.

We lost power here for almost a week from Charlie. All of our neigbors got together for a bbq and we all had fun. I think going powerless for a while is something people should experience every now and then to get in touch with the people around us, if not just for the appreciation of having it returned.
