So my husband thinks i’ve gone crazy…

D seems to be having some kind of decluttering crisis. Ever since i discovered freecycle and have rediscovered the joys of freeing myself of unecessary items, I’ve been finding new homes for things we don’t need or just never use. And he’s made it sound 3 times as though I’ve gone off the deep end or something. Honestly, I think he finds comfort in clutter. He thinks i’m insane to suggest it but there IS such a thing as using clutter for comfort and even acting like you’re addicted to it. Ever heard of hoarders? Some people just don’t feel comfortable in a neat, clean, and sterile environment. I feel that way too, I don’t like ’sterile’. I like a little bit of clutter, but my thresshold is a LOT lower than his.

what have we really gotten rid of anyway? nothing we need, nothing we’ll even ever miss. so why the anxiety? I mentioned I wanted to sell my piano yesterday and he freaked. It’s my piano for christ sake, and I haven’t used it in months. So, ok, fine. I won’t sell it. jeez..

next i’m freecycling 3 computers, a monitor (maybe selling a second) a coffee table and then donating tons upon tons of clothes to charity. I can’t wait to get to the clothes!

NO I’M NOT LOSING MY MIND, DENNIS! WE SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS MONTHS AGO!!!

oh! and we found some really cool used toys J just loves. AND we bought her a boating life vest for when we go to the keys for 10 bucks! is that cool, or what?

sigh… so in other news.. My first ebay sale went very well. I sold my 1gb memory card for 66 bucks. that was way more than I expected to sell it. What’s shocking is that other BRAND NEW NEVER OPENNED cards were getting lower bids than mine. I’m sure having spruced up my ad helped but still. why bid more on mine than on another brand spanking never used one? This is why i’m not in marketing, I guess.

Heh, Sean’s mystified, too, but as long as it’s not -his- stuff I’m getting rid of, he’s just amused. Wlofie’s all for it.

Sean doesn’t really know why he hoards. Some of it is sentimental, kind of, like the erector set and Lego sets he’s had since childhood. But some is just plain silly, like the mountain of computers and terminals that we’re paying $80 per month to store at Uncle Bob’s.

I dunno how graceful you and Dennis are, but I’m not. I can’t live in a cluttered house because I knock stuff over and trip on things and bump into stuff, and that makes me NUTS! Sean may not understand the psychological pressure that all the STUFF puts on me, but at least he can understand how my own gracelessness makes clutter a physical nightmare.

LOL!! I tried to explain to D that I was doing this for the greater good of our family.. and to improve the state of my mental health.. and so on.. and he looked at me like I had truly lost my mind.

I’m lucky that he hasn’t kept much stuff from his childhood or school days. when he moved in with me 3 years ago all he brought were his clothes, his 3 computers, and a couple boxes of junk, not too bad.. He’s agreed to get rid of one of them, so that’s a start. Most of this crap we have is just my own!

we don’t have a whole lot of clutter that gets in the way. All the stuff i’m finding new homes for have been crammed in our garage (which was supposed to have been our office) and in our guest bedroom. that’s about 800 square feet we’ve been paying our mortgage company to use as STORAGE SPACE. It just kills me that I can fill 5 garbage bags full of trash and still it looks like i haven’t put a dent in the garage. It seriously feels liberating to do it. I’m glad I got started, I’ll keep going as long as I have the want to do it (YOU HEAR ME, D?) and I still have a long way to go!

The mac is only about 10 years old ;)

Here’s the specs on the mac:

    Powermac 8500/120 (http://www.lowendmac.com/mail/03/0528.html)
    - getting to the motherboard is a PITA on these machines, RAM upgrades require that you pretty much dismantle the entire machine (http://www.lowendmac.com/mail/03/0528.html#6)

    Upgraded with:

ATI Xclaim 3D (4MB VRAM) PCI video card
    PCI USB card
    384MB RAM
XLR8 CarrierZIF card (allows the 8500 to take ZIF upgrades)
    G3 366Mhz CPU
I forget exactly what drives are installed, but I think there is 1 6GB SCSI and another 9-20GB SCSI drive.

It’s not the most stable machine in its current state, but it can run OS 8/9/Linux decently. I had various versions of OS X installed (Public beta, 10.0, and 10.1) and a 1-2 year old Yellow Dog Linux install is on it presently. It is missing the power button which you sometimes need to perform a ’soft’ reset, but this particular mac can be powered on from the keyboard.

well, it LOOKS like a dinasaur. Maybe we should keep that one for the lady at the school. They need usable donations.
