HOA flyer warfare

I mentioned a few weeks ago how Dennis had found out, by accident, that the president of our HOA was harboring a sex offender in her house just yards away from the neighborhood playground and just across the street from a middle school. He said that we should cook up an anonymous flyer and stuff all the neighborhood mailboxes with it. I told him to chill out and that the board of directors must already know about it. He must be there legally, right?

Seems like someone else in the community found out and decided to create an anonymous flyer of their own. The flyer talks about questionably large fines issued for “trivial violations” and questionable money spending decisions by the president of the HOA and how she makes decisions against the will of the other members of the board of directors. It then mentions the existence of a sex offender in our community. And “how many residents with children know that he is living at xxxx blah street?” and “How many residents know that he is the HOA president’s son?” and “How many residents with children know that he is there illegally because he is less than 2500 feet from a place where children gather?” It goes from beating around the bush to coming right on out and demanding the resignation of the president. It included his car make and model and license plate number. It’s signed “A concerned resident and mother”. A poorly formatted letter, at best, but gutsy nontheless.

I told my husband that it felt like we’re living in a real life case of Desperate Housewives.

Then yesterday the HOA submitted their flyer rebuttle which explained how the sexual offense took place years ago (this alone brings little relief to me at least) and that it was his girlfriend who happened to be underaged. I don’t know about anybody else, but I still think it’s sick for a 20-something year to be dating a pre-18 year old.

For a couple years now there has been one conflict after another between our HOA and either ex-members of the HOA board of directors or other disgruntled homeowners and they have been duking it out in public with these flyers in our mailboxes. It goes way back to the days when the HOA decided to go with a different landscaper. After they dropped the old landscaper, which happens to be a resident here, the old landscaper sent out his HOA bashing flyer, then the hoa sent out their flyer bashing the landscaper. It’s been a dirty flyer battle after another around here.

I’ve always thought it was humorous to see this go on. It’s like we have a bunch of kids running this place. As long as it doesnt’ touch me, I’m good. But that didn’t last long.

After the landscaper thing happened, the HOA, out of the clear blue, decided to enforce their “law” against the parking of commercial trucks and vans in residential driveways. I guess this included the old landscaper’s truck, eh? Then the HOA started to crack down on all violaters of HOA rules like tall grass, stained exterior walls, missing fences, and rotted wood. I asked the HOA president why they are cracking down so hard all of a sudden and I kid you not her answer was “because otherwise we won’t be able to justify cracking down on the commercial vehicles”. So to get at the landscaper, they have to come down on everybody else? And what’s the fine if we don’t comply? Well, just a measly $1000 bucks a day. That’s all. Just pocket change, really. Just a fraction of the cost of repair. Because we all live in multi-million dollar homes. Right I forgot.

Assholes.

Dude, that all ROYALLY SUCKS! So, can’t the homeowners of said HOA decide on a new president? I don’t know how any of that goes but, it seems to me like your neighborhood needs to start new. . . and FAST!

20 something year old with pre-18 year old - Ewh! And years ago or not, if she is so adament that ‘everyone must follow the rules’ then I would think that she would remember that when her son is breaking the JUDICIAL system rules and living closer than he is allowed to a school. Not to say that she shouldn’t help him but, things should be done legally. At least, that is how I would want to see it done if it were my neighborhood.

It does seem to offer a bit of amusement except for the $1000 per day fine for those idiotic offenses (grass that’s too tall? So, what do they do? Come out with little tape measures and measure your grass??? - What if you are on vacation, it rains like hell and your grass gets too tall??? - Blech!)

Sorry about all that drama. You don’t happen to live on Wisteria Lane do you?

no such luck on the wisteria lane deal. you know i just realized that there has never been mention of an HOA on that show. We could have been fined $1000/day for the rotted wood except that I had requested permission to redo the entire exterior of our house before they issued the warnings so I think that saved us. We had already contracted someone for the job by the time the deadline came up. It wasn’t done yet, but we had a contract.

Whoa, $1000/day . . . that’s extremely steep. In fact, depending on where you live, it’s steep enough that it’s likely to be illegal. And that’s if it was levied properly, which (again, depending on your location) it probably wasn’t.
